Alternative Firings More Info: Lissa of @earthplaystudio, Natasha of @clayhandsand Alila of @alilapottery together will be hosting an alternative firing weekend workshop on Saturday and Sunday the 17th and 18th of April. We will be doing 5 different alternative firings, for more info on that read the next paragraph. Cost is R2100 all materials and 4 vegetarian meals included - Lunch and supper on the Saturday and breakfast and lunch on the Sunday as well as snacks and drinks throughout (byob). **If you'd love to do the workshop but it is simply just out of your price range, please get in touch, there are a couple of spots available at a discounted rate!
Mother and daughter power team Tash and Lissa will be taking us through 3 different raku firings: horse hair and feather raku, obvara and 'traditional' raku. I will guide you through a paper kiln firing where we build a pottery oven out of paper mache, we'll also pack and fire a sawdust firing. These are all awesome earthy, fiery volcanoes of sawdust, raw materials, fumes and pottery! I'll post a bit more on each technique on instagram over the course of the next week or so. This workshop is open to all experience levels, you don't need to be a potter to dive into the alchemy of alternative firing! If you don't have work to put in the kiln, pottery items (what we call bisqueware) will be available for purchase on the day, starting at R50.
A bit of background for those who are interested: This will be our first Pottery workshop hosted at Millstone and it only seems fitting to be doing it with Lissa and Natasha. I have known them both since I was 3 years old; Natasha has been my friend and clay sister ever since and Lissa was and still is (!) our pottery teacher. The first ever workshop Tash and I did at Millstone as participants we came with Lissa in 2015 and it was a raku workshop. Now, 6 years later we are all hosting one here together, it feels fitting, like both the completing of a circle and the beginning of something new.
